Tax Depth You Won’t Find at a General Practice

Most accountants can file your T2. Fewer can tell you whether your corporation’s passive investments are quietly eroding your small business deduction, or whether an IPP beats topping up your RRSP at this stage of your career.

Robert Occhiuto, CPA, CA holds CPA Canada’s In-Depth Tax certification and spent over 20 years in public accounting, including three years at BDO Canada. You get that depth applied directly to your file, by the person you actually hired.

Common Questions about working with us

The In-Depth Tax Program is CPA Canada’s specialist tax training — three years of coursework beyond the CA designation, and uncommon in firms this size. It matters for the problems professional corporations actually run into: passive investment income grinding down the small business deduction, TOSI limits on income splitting, holding company structures, and estate freezes. Most of these get handled badly not through carelessness but because they’re genuinely technical.

It depends on whether you’re consistently earning more than you spend. Incorporation defers tax on income you leave in the corporation — which is valuable if you can leave it there, and largely pointless if you draw everything out. We’ll model your actual numbers before you pay a lawyer to set anything up.

Reach out by phone or email for a free initial consultation. We’ll talk through your situation and tell you honestly whether we’re the right fit.

Neither answer is universal, and the rule-of-thumb versions circulating online tend to ignore RRSP contribution room, CPP contributions, and the timing of when you’ll actually need the money. It’s an annual calculation, not a one-time decision, and it’s one of the more common places we find money left on the table.
